Paolo Mottana - Mariposas ...

Jahrhundert - (extract)

in: Hinrich Bergmeier (Hg.), Le Sacre: Musik - Ritus - Religiosität (Biennale Neue Musik Hannover 2001), Saarbrücken 2001, S. 20-35.

Pietro Cavallotti - The voice of nature

from the monographic CD '... germinación y canto' edited by Moretti Multimedia

The already wide output of Luca Belcastro is certainly crossed by a common trait: i.e., the communicative intent of his poetics. As a proof, here are included the compositions representing the creative period between 1998 and 2002.
One may enjoy and appreciate Belcastro's music on different levels: the subtleties of his composing and the complexity of his musical structure can be appreciated by both a musicologist and a learned listener accustomed to contemporary music. But at the same time, it allows - encourages it, actually - an immediate approach by means of the music's strong evocative character: actually, each musical event has its own life, following each other throughout the composition with an incessant interplay of repetitions and recalls to memory. The title of the piano short piece - ... passo leggero (1998) - is due to the last line of Cesare Pavese's You, wind of March (from the collection Verrà la morte e avrà i tuoi occhi). In the poem, similar images recur over and over, though without a true evolution. Similarly, this piece is built on very few elements: musical patterns with an individual rhythmic and melodic profile starting when the previous pattern vanishes, expanding and then fading away, then suddenly back again varied yet always recognisable; all this creates a feeling of familiarity. In spite of an original timbre, a true melodic development as well as a regular periodic rhythm is lacking: in fact, expression and gesture of these patterns seem to derive directly from 19th century piano music. The immediacy of these musical events is due not only to their store of expression, but also to their 'vitality', that is their taking part in the life and death process of nature. Furthermore, 'nature', or better the contemplation and evocation of its beauty, can be considered the absolute protagonist of Belcastro's music as to matter and form.

One of the most surprising aspects of the author's compositional technique, though rather difficult to capture while listening, lies in the careful and almost mechanical stage of predetermining musical material. As a result of 20th century crisis of tonality, composing music gradually meant facing the question of formal phrasing: actually, the logical connections in the stream of events, usually ensured in Classical music by harmonic relationships, was now lacking. In the latter half of 1950's, along with the development of serialism, many composers solved this problem by moving it to a pre-compositional stage: therefore, they established rational rules (often valid for a single composition) that could pre-ordain the exact position of each element within the temporal lapse of the whole piece. Belcastro's music is one of those cases, although his entire production shares a common principle: i.e., the articulation of musical form on the basis of the golden section.
There is probably no need to point out the important role the golden section has played in different branches of human knowledge. It was theorized by Euclid, but probably already known by Pythagoreans: as a consequence of the "extreme and mean ratio" - consisting of the division of a given distance in two sections so that the ratio of the longer section to the shorter section equals the ratio of the whole distance to the longer section -, ancient mathematics and geometry had to encounter the idea of the irrationality of a number (1,6180339...) that could not be expressed by a fraction of integer numbers. From Renaissance up to now, this proportion has been largely used in architecture and in art. In music, it has been sometimes employed probably by Bartók, certainly by Ligeti, while there are detailed (yet not so well-founded) studies attempting to trace the golden section in Bach and Mozart's music. Moreover, this proportion is incredibly frequent in nature: for example, in the layout of rose petals, or in the spiral of certain snail shells, or in several geometric shapes, such as the pentagon or the five-point star. Therefore, Belcastro has chosen the golden section as univocal system of the formal definition of his works, clearly in virtue of its 'natural' essence and of the idea of harmony traditionally linked to it. By means of a progressive division in sections increasingly smaller, he determines the moment of 'birth' and 'death' of musical events, as well as the entry of each voice's patterns; with similar mathematic criteria, he also establishes rhythmic articulation and pitch organization.

However, beyond the structural aspects concerning the personal compositional technique, the importance of naturalistic themes in Belcastro's music is also evident in the content, clearly disclosed in the choice of texts. With regard to this, the intensive knowledge of Pablo Neruda's work is quite significant; actually, in 1997-98 Belcastro composed many pieces on texts by the Chilean poet, or rather affected by their evocative power: among them, two pieces are here included, caminando hacia el mar (1998) for voice, flute, cello and piano - I will discuss in detail this piece later - and ... cristal verde del mundo (1998) for clarinet, percussions and strings. The latter is a transcription for string orchestra of a previous composition for four players, atraviesan el aire aves abrasadoras (1997). Both pieces refer to Neruda's Oda a una mañana del Brasil (from the 1959 collection Navegaciones y regresos), in which the poet dwelt on the description and admiration on a Brazilian morning of the fascinating kingdom of plants and animals. The "green crystal of the world" is exactly the Amazonian forest, where the air "is crossed by sparkling birds", as the title of the original composition recalls. The piece is strongly descriptive: reminiscences sounds and colours evoked by the text echo throughout the piece, each musical event with a particular timbre following the other and constantly appearing in different contexts. The clarinet has an almost solo role, whereas the orchestra evokes now the adamantine sounds of the forest (in particular, created by the timbre of vibraphone and marimba), now the silent flow of the river, now the life of "a multitude of slow creatures crushed by the blind wood".

Besides contemplation of nature, the theme of subjective introspection permeates la voce delle creature (2001), a four-voice piece on a text derived from the Confessions of St Augustine. In Belcastro's setting, an urgent incitement to introspection ("Look into yourself": "Guarda dentro di te") always interrupts the saint's search for evidence of God in a pressing dialogue with natural elements. The vocal quartet (countertenor, two tenors and bass) alternate musical sections often evoking the nature investigated by the philosopher to recited passages, thus enabling the comprehension of text. Moreover, the line "Guarda dentro di te" never occurs entirely, but only fragmented into segments insisting on the phonetics of specific syllables or consonants (above all "gu" of "guarda", "n" and "t" of "dentro"), thus emphasizing how inner introspection is difficult and must be meticulous.

The tendency to 'make the consonants sing', investigating the musical potential of unaccented phonemes such as "s" and "t" and of sounds such as a sigh, a whisper or a murmur, is a typical element of Belcastro's works. It is also present in another piece for vocal quartet, spotlights on "The Tempest" (2002), based on a text by William Shakespeare. But only short passages of the Shakespearean comedy are set to music: in the first movement the introduction of Ariel and Caliban (Act I, scene 2) and their respective dream of freedom in the second (Act V, scene 1 and Act III, scene 2). The piece is based on the contrast between the two characters: the ethereal nature of Ariel, being a good spirit of nature, is illustrated with an extremely simple and cantabile melody of the tenor; the other voices join in echo, softly repeating single elements in piano and with rhythmic augmentations. On the contrary, the state of Caliban, prisoner of Prospero and confined underground in chains, is represented by a fragmented melody with misplaced rhythmic accents. The voices linger over the consonants as if reaching the releasing sound of vowels was difficult, therefore symbolizing the character's inability to express himself.

la hora fría (1999) for eleven players and spoken voice ad libitum, is a piece on the relentless flowing of time. The poetic text by Federico García Lorca La selva de los relojes [The mass of clocks] is the starting point for a research on particular timbre and sound effects representing different moments of the text (such as the initial ticking of the clocks, or the sound of an organette "I had when I was a child", here recreated by a South American melody of the clarinet in the second part of the first movement). In the second movement there is an interesting example of self-quotation: in order to represent the "enormous spider" weaving its web to hope, Belcastro uses patterns already proposed in his 'op. 1' (Terra - Dalla rete dell'oro, 1989), where Quasimodo's text reads "revolting spiders come down from web of gold" ("dalla rete dell'oro scendono ragni ripugnanti"). The unceasing transformation and variation of single elements is repeated within a strongly irregular rhythmic texture, aiming to hold back the relentless flowing of time at least in the listener's mind. The author states: "in front of the presage of the final cold time, in both the composition and the poem there is an attempt of arousing the dream of reversible time: one wishes to invert its rapid stream, so that it becomes a perpetual source, not a river flowing into the sea". Finally, there is only to mention the spatial disposal of players in this piece: the clarinet plays off-stage at the beginning, appearing on stage during the first movement. Both spatiality and theatrical effects are traits gradually assuming an important role in Belcastro's recent works.

1. Parte - intero

Contenuto e forma cominciano a coagularsi assieme.

Carlo Serra - Number, sound, perspective

from the monographic CD '... germinación y canto' edited by Moretti Multimedia

1. Parts to the whole

The music you are going to listen to is built on a proportional system based on the golden section: what connects music to the world of numbers appears always quite obvious, because immediately referring to the relationship between a musical interval and eventually its translation in a mathematical ratio.
And yet, if one thinks it over better, this outlook on the relationship between music and numbers explains absolutely nothing about listening dynamics: we do not perceive numbers, nor frequency ratio, but sounds belonging to the quality dimension of listening, even though sounds have characters that can be described mathematically.
Numbers certainly express many relationships, but reference to a mathematical characterization as the keystone for access to music immediately tends to mingle several problems. Therefore, the meaning of this relationship remains dull if we do not understand with which depth this analogy is engaged: i.e., how is sound bound to numbers? Probably, all the answers would go towards its abstractness, its incorporeity, apparently similar to the abstractness of mathematical calculus. But these similarities are narrow and before long we are once again stuck in the reasoning. With numbers you calculate, but music isn't only calculus: a music piece doesn't have those characters, though in music we calculate durations, pitches, even the relevance of variable traits such as timbre.
We must understand in which sense we make calculations as to sounds: if we try to discuss less in the abstract the question of mathematical relationships and proportions, asserting the descriptive valence of numbers, therefore the reasoning would immediately change sense. Actually, we would soon learn that the measuring instrument of sounds gets in contact with a matter and describes its relationships and development. For example, a proportion isn't simply a numerical ratio, referring to a mathematical value, but also the way of organizing the division of something - this is what our teacher taught us at primary school, but we forgot it. When we establish a ratio, our attention turns to the numerical value to which the ratio seems to refer. However, we should think over this problem and the formulation itself: 1/2 and 0,50 are not the same thing. The proportion points out the ratio relating the whole to the parts. It describes the form of that proportion, indicating it as a numerical ratio and showing a process: therefore, an operation of division, a process begins, whereas reference to a value informs us on the result of the process itself. The proportion shows the establishment of a point of view on the whole.
But what happens as soon as we move away from the abstract dominion of numbers, moving towards its sensible realization? A formal criterion articulating the idea of the relationship between the whole and the parts. Proportion probably may appear less empyreal, but its formalizing power is simply amazing. Each object can be analysed according to a division showing how it is articulated in its components. Each object has an architecture one can articulate in an increasingly rich way, grasping its relevance in accordance to the relationships one has established for it: in that sense, even if two thirds and three halves don't have the same reference number, they refer to the same object and therefore are equivalent. The object transforms itself by means of a process: at will, one decides how to enter and dwell in the place where the whole coexists with its parts.
These remarks are as much as to say that numerical divisions immediately create a space, that can assume at first a narrative value, thus imposing a course to whom visits the object. This course steers the imaginative valences to bring into play: one can brake the whole into a thousand pieces, expressing the feeling of being closer to the discrete nuclei of the structure and making the parts merge in a remembrance of the whole; otherwise one can split it clean, maybe into two. Proportions generate many imaginings on the matter of the whole and on the way of living in it. The possibility of narrating has still to take shape, but can move through well-defined indexes, controllable by mathematics; whereas the object repeatedly wavers between different interpretations concerning continuity or discretion, an outlined form or a vibrating and pervasive matter. Matter and form start merging together. Is something similar possible concerning sound?

2. From event to form

Music often makes use of abstract schemes, since ever adopted with rapture: a mathematical criterion allows to divide the articulation of events in accordance with rigorous schemes; but there is immediately an expressive problem bound to the ontological nature of sound. Sound is an object of which the temporal structural manifests itself immediately to one's eyes: actually, sound is a process not depending on us.
The use of a numeric grid supporting the relationship among durations becomes the first instrument to decide how you want things to happen: as to dramaturgy, this component has an immediate repercussion. All actions can be sustained by means of numbers. One can work on emphasizing symmetrical components or determining a criterion with a structuring power, without falling directly on a specular symmetry: therefore, the golden section is the first, most immediate criterion to adopt, actually being able to express many relationships sustaining the development of organic forms. Another chance is fractals, of course, but the magniloquent reference to this mathematical formula must not divert us from the sound process: a descriptive tool is a mean and therefore in itself does not explain anything. As soon as the articulation possibilities rise, the whole seems to quiver in the movement of its possible hierarchies.
An evanescent matter such as sound becomes a structure always within a relational grid: it can be grasped in the identity of the rhythmical beat referable to itself and to the forms of its articulation; otherwise as a sonorous segment moving between two poles, while specifying its interval and harmonic relationship. But sound can also be understood as the same point in the space seized by the texture of two instruments in unison: in this case, we experience timbre differentiation by grasping the same point in the space, though coming from different directions. Sound starts receiving the formal properties of numbers, so that our relationship fires imaginative tensions. Relevance and density of sound events can be traced to a first schematisation fixing the structure while it happens; at will, one can later go back to that scheme, even though sound is far away. The scheme is an image and numbers are part of the imagination producing sound schemes, being themselves images of processes.

3. Imagination

When the theme of music and imagination and their relationship is involved, we are dragged in two directions. The strict formalistic admonition warns us that music is only an interplay of signs referring exclusively to each other. No image, no semantic reference. And yet, a sign referring to itself makes no sense; it has always to refer to a thought supporting that reference. As soon as we step towards references, one feels himself surrounded by cuckoos, exotic birds, trains, winds, battles, fencing school, earthquakes, cannon shots, and so on: all these picturesque references discourage any reflection on the subject, relegating music to a mere didactic narration.
However, the little game with numbers has shown that the dimension of listening and of sound is not at all passive: sounds call us and composers know very well that this relationship is intensely pragmatic. Sound is deformed, rises and falls, lingers and anticipates us; sound is trapped in a game grabbing it while the time of its appearance completely extinguishes.
Sounds at the top or bottom, limpid or dark, low or high, vitreous or opaque: this is how sounds are named, so that the theme of imagination, together with the directions that sound takes within reflection on imaginary, drastically changes sense. Sound becomes a vehicle of imagination: this means that sound plays with objects, evoking them by their corporeity, by the luminescence of a timbre, by the density of a rhythmical event; here the image is not only a metaphor, but a structural aspect articulating the relationships depending on numbers.
The idea of sound figuration, proposed by Giovanni Piana (Filosofia della Musica, Guerini e Associati, Milano, 1991), aimed exactly at lingering over those materials and over their ways of presentation. Compared to other arts, music enjoys a rare quality: actually, it presents its own schematisations on a sensible level; in this capacity music investigates the perception of who imagines and listens to a sound. Therefore, music establishes a relationship in which image in itself is involved by both the imaginative and the structural valence: here, where sound is structured, the adventure of numbers starts, therefore defining the limits within composer's freedom can play independently of the choice of a language. Actually, relationships determined by numbers do not coincide with an idiom, they do not determine a language but the way of presenting the succession of sound material within the piece. Music stops on the border of imagination, while the scheme starts winding up the typical movement of sound process.

4. Figuration and flux

The grid now passes in the background and is still precious to shape the inner tendencies of sound material: here, the whole game of music intertwined with perceptive material finally emerges. Let us try to observe this dialectic free from musicological or analytical claims: in Nero... ma come del mar Oceano (2004) for violin and four players, the proportion shapes the presentation of the materials and of the gestures of the performer, now turning his back to the audience, now turning aside. The change of position in the space implies many references, such as the change of the sound source in the space, or the dramatization of the performing gesture, or the fact of being straight in front of the audience. Therefore, as to the group accompanying the solo instrument, the vehicle leading his phonic realization changes.
The violin narrates, while the flute has to sustain the text derived from Book XII of the Odyssey regarding Ulysses passage in front of the Sirens: actually, text is cut down to a few fragments only, a sort of narrative pretext hiding one the most important models concerning the burst of magic and of seduction within the relationship between music and nature. Listening to the Sirens song, Ulysses will experience inaudibility and magic, thus mediating between the experience of interior listening and the composer's work on concrete sound.
The sense of that mimesis is realized by pronouncing the words slowly, stressing the consonants together with a rapid tremolo on the flute's mouthpiece tightened by the lips. Therefore, the text is incomprehensible and estranged, but has immediately an extraordinarily expressive function: the timber colour of the voice avoids all madrigalisms and involves the area where sound is formed. Actually, the alteration of reciting prevails on metre, thus evoking the stream of speech: when reading Odyssey, all readers encounter exactly that kind of untranslatable and fluid sound reverberation. Before the violin puts on the scene its flourishing writing, the composer lingers on the problem of the mimetic relationship with nature: that is, how to shape what is inaudible, re-proposing the throbbing of an almost unrecognisable sound source sinking in the past. The audience isn't able to grasp the poetical idea underlying the text, that is committed to the player only, forced to read from the score the words he will distort. He is lonely, just the same as Ulysses in front of the Sirens song: he senses something he cannot recount. But also his violin (personifying Ulysses), that puts together all the instruments' overtones and elaborates them in his solo, finds itself in the same situation: that of a game of mirrors reflecting the growth of sound from inarticulate to articulate. Therefore, the theme of the dialectic of memory and of the unpronounceable is announced: here, breaths and vocal inhalations are held back near the piano pedal resonance, while the violin and cello's conclusion breaks in, articulating their gestures on a rhythmical ratio based on the numerical grid.
What do we grasp of this situation? What happens where the noise of the voice, the strings melodic pattern, the piano verticality in pianissimo becoming colour, concurrently grow into three sound aggregations gradually relevant as to the descending pattern of the bass clarinet? Sound is articulated in the most elementary components, three different sound aggregations are concurrently carried on with a solid writing. The numerical ratio and its harsh organization allows to slip from that frame (seizing the vanishing timbre) to the rhythmical evocation of beaten wood (see mm. 11-15).
The transition covering the passage from interval to rhythm, from pitch to stroke, supports the hidden numerical model, that represents a drive allowing to live in a context, to structure it, but never shows itself except by transient sound concretions. Finally, in the metamorphic process shaping the sound realization, the dialectic sustained by numbers between form and pattern, structural contour and morphologic variant stands out. Numbers have structured the scheme, the scheme has become poetic imagery. By determining the relationship among all the elements involved, the golden section determines a frame. The poetics of this little gesture discloses the natural model that Luca Belcastro adopts to play the metaphysical game of meaning.
